It’s got a good look to it, and it’ll be coming to PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.The trailer shows off a few boss fights and some standard gameplay, as well as one of the boss powers you can unlock, which lets Mega Man attack enemies by dropping blocks from the sky onto them. This was unveiled during a, along with a few other goodies. Capcom also announced that the two Mega Man Legacy collections, covering Mega Man 1-6 and 7-10 respectively, are coming to Switch.

Stay on target. If you have a, chances are you also have. The new Zelda is a massive, phenomenal game that you can and should play for dozens of hours. But eventually, you’re going to want to play something new on your Nintendo console/handheld hybrid.

Is a new column highlighting cool, smaller Switch games to check out once you’ve saved Hyrule.Things have been pretty rough for Mega Man lately. The Blue Bomber, Capcom’s one-time mascot, used to be omnipresent. But now we’re lucky to see him make cameo appearances in while Capcom shifts its resources toward Monster Hunter and making great again. Even worse, the theoretical spiritual successor from questionable Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune, blew millions of Kickstarter dollars on a straight-up bad Mega Man knock-off. Mighty Gunvolt Burst is an expanded spin-off crossover between fellow Mega Man-esque shooter-platformer series Azure Striker Gunvolt and Mighty No. All of these games were developed by Inti Creates, who recently brought us the great neo-retro Switch game. It really seems like Mighty No.

9 was just an unfortunate anomaly, because Mighty Gunvolt Burst proves how casually excellent the studio is at making games like this. The game blends narrative elements from both series, and you can play as both heroes with their own tweaked movesets, but the framework is pure classic Mega Man. After an intro stage, players can jump into any of eight themed stages, skillfully hopping and shooting their way towards a colorful end boss. For high scores, the game wants you to kill enemies up close one after another to build a burst combo, but I never really bothered. It’s tough, but once you get a feel for the exact physics and enemy behaviors of an encounter the challenges are always fair.

I must’ve played and replayed a section with rising water and fireball-spewing chimney robots over a dozen times, but I powered through. Once you vanquish the bosses, four more final levels are unlocked. It’s no Wily’s Castle, but again, we have to take what we can get here. The trademark mechanic of classic Mega Man games is equipping the guns of fallen bosses. Protective leaf shields, sharp spinning metal discs, hornet blasts, and countless other wacky weapons have been part of Mega Man’s arsenal over the years. Plus, beating the bosses in the right order to take advantage of their weaknesses to certain guns forms the Mega Man metagame. Mighty Gunvolt Burst expands on this system in a brilliant, utterly addictive way. In Mighty Gunvolt Burst you can make your own guns.

Want to shoot three massive lightning blasts that explode on impact? How about homing missiles? An aura of flame? It’s all possible. All of the core Mega Man gun concepts are there, including the elements stronger against certain bosses, but now they can be remixed into almost endless new forms. To keep yourself from being completely overpowered at the start, each attribute drains a certain amount of energy from your allowance you increase as you proceed. Some of the best (and costliest) powers, like better damage resistance and air dashing, also must be found in the world. Free ask a nurse hotline.

One upgrade even vibrates the Switch when secrets are nearby. Like an RPG, these carrots on sticks just encouraged me to keep playing, to keep tweaking my loadouts on the fly to find better options. One ultra powerful bomb gun might be too slow as a base weapon, but as a charge shot for a fast wave blaster it’s perfect. It’s almost cheating. The system also makes you feel like you are really tinkering with a machine, a concept classic Mega Man just hints at.

I even looked at the achievement conditions, which I never do.Mighty Gunvolt Burst is a cool little Mega Man homage, but the gun customization is a legitimately great mechanic that made me sink way more time into the game than I would’ve otherwise. Now that we’ve seen what Inti Creates can do with Blaster Master and (basically) Mega Man, I can’t wait to see their take on Castlevania with future fellow non-Zelda Nintendo Switch game.
